Oakhurst In Your Diet: Naturally Nutrient-Rich Milk

Nutrient Rich

We all grew up knowing that the calcium in milk helps build strong bones. But milk is also packed with other essential nutrients that are good for the whole body. Milk is considered "nutrient rich" because it provides 9 essential nutrients without a lot of calories. In fact, studies show that low-fat milk can play an important role in maintaining healthy weight levels. Simply put, Oakhurst Milk is a naturally healthy and delicious way to include essential nutrients in your diet every day.

Milk pouring

One of the essential nutrients found in milk is Vitamin D; in fact milk is one of the few dietary sources of Vitamin D. Recent studies have shown that many New Englanders are Vitamin D deficient because the sun is not strong enough for much of the year to allow our skin to make Vitamin D from the UV rays. One 8 oz glass of Oakhurst milk gives you 100 IU of Vitamin D.

An 8-ounce serving of Oakhurst milk helps you meet your recommended daily value (DV) of these important nutrients:

Oakhurst In Your Diet: Oakhurst Plus NU-TRISH®

Oakhurst Nu-Trish label

In addition to our regular line of milk we offer Oakhurst Plus NU-TRISH® milk with probiotics. Probiotics are live microorganisms that are added to some foods to increase the number of "good bacteria" that live in your intestinal tract and provide additional health benefits, such as boosting the immune system, improving digestion and increasing absorption of some nutrients. Probiotics also allow people with lactose sensitivity to better digest milk and they reduce the risk/symptoms of some food allergies.
NU-TRISH is a trademark of Chr. Hansen

Oakhurst In Your Diet: Cultured Products

Oakhurst Cottage Cheese is a good way to add protein and calcium to your diet. A half cup serving provides approximately the same amount of protein as 2 oz. of meat or chicken. Oakhurst cottage cheese makes a great snack alone, with added fruit, or spread on crackers. Add it to your favorite salad for a protein and calcium boost as well. Oakhurst Lowfat Cottage Cheese is a calorie-efficient way to get about the same amount of protein and calcium, but with almost no cholesterol or saturated fat.

Here's a big surprise! Oakhurst Buttermilk is actually fat-free! Although from the name, it sounds like a high fat food, buttermilk contains all the protein and calcium of regular milk, but has no fat. A hint for saving calories in some of your baked goods, is to replace the fat and liquid ingredients with buttermilk. An example would be to make biscuits, pancake batter, or quick breads (banana bread, cornbread, etc.) without the shortening and to use buttermilk as the liquid. If the recipe calls for a half cup of oil, replace it with a half cup of buttermilk. It not only saves calories but adds nutrition at the same time!

Oakhurst In Your Diet: Orange Juice

Oakhurst 100% Orange Juice combines a wealth of nutritional benefits. Vitamin C tends to get most of the limelight, but orange juice also contains potassium, folate, magnesium, vitamin B6, niacin, riboflavin, and an abundance of "phytonutrients" that keep the body optimally healthy. Potassium is being encouraged for improving high blood pressure, but folate and the other B vitamins also benefit the cardiovascular system. Additionally, folate is important for women pre-conception to reduce the risk of birth defects.

Oakhurst Orange Juice Plus Calcium has all the benefits of our regular orange juice plus added calcium. Eight ounces gives you 30% DV of calcium, which is equal to a cup of milk.
