Our milk comes from cows that eat, drink and breathe the environment everyday. Below are just a few of our activities to keep Maine and New Hampshire green.
Recyclable Plastic Jugs
Our clear jugs are the preferred choice for recycling, and, unlike white jugs, they let you see exactly how much Oakhurst Milk you have on hand!
The Oakhurst Millennium Tree Challenge and the Portland Tree Trust
From 1993 through 2000, Oakhurst spearheaded The Millennium Tree Challenge, an effort to help make Portland once again the "Forest City". Thanks to the participation of over 60 companies, more than 1,000 trees were planted on City property.
To continue this reforestation effort, Oakhurst has become a major supporter of the City of Portland Tree Trust, which aims to raise over $250,000 from local companies and individuals by 2006. The Dairy alone has pledged 10% of this total, or $25,000 ($5,000 per year for five years), to help plant more trees throughout the City.
Non-CFC Refrigerants
To reduce our impact on the ozone layer, we have converted our entire fleet of 100 trucks and trailers to non-CFC refrigerants.
The Nature Conservancy
In 2000, Oakhurst made a major gift to the For Maine Forever Campaign, "The campaign to save Maine's great places". With these funds, the Nature Conservancy purchases selected lands with unique natural beauty or environmental importance, and protects them from development...forever!
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!
The dairy converted its boilers to a more environmentally friendly fuel, reuses truck lubricants as fuel for a garage heater, and has an ongoing commitment to reduce the fat content and suspended solids levels of effluent prior to Portland waste treatment.
The company has a strict waste-reduction policy that includes recycling the usual office materials, but also includes dairy production storage units, and the unsalable milk and whey products are recycled to farmers who use them as feed for livestock.
