Oakhurst Dairy Announces Use of USA Grown Apples Label on Apple Juice
PORTLAND, MAINE — March 27, 2012 — Oakhurst Dairy, northern New England’s largest independent family-owned dairy company, is reinforcing its commitment to sourcing its ingredients from the United States by adding a label on its pint apple juice containers that states “USA Grown Apples.” The new containers began hitting store shelves across New England in January.
Many companies that make consumer apple juice source the concentrate internationally with the leading suppliers being Brazil, Argentina, Chile and China. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), China is the world’s largest supplier of apple juice concentrate and the source for about two-thirds of the United States apple juice supply.
These international suppliers are not required to adhere to the same standards as U.S. apple growers.
The United States has a robust apple growing industry with the Western Region of the United States accounting for 65% of the nation’s apple crop and Eastern and Central apple producing states accounting for 25% and 10% respectively according to the USDA in 2008. The largest concentrate processing area is Eastern Washington State.
“Oakhurst Dairy is proud to distinguish its apple juice from our competitors by sourcing 100% of the concentrate from farmers in the United States,” said Bill Bennett, President and CEO, Oakhurst Dairy. “We encourage consumers to become more aware of what they are buying by reading the labels carefully.”
Oakhurst Dairy has a rich history of community service and environmental stewardship and has long been recognized as a company committed to doing what is right.
In 2000, Oakhurst Dairy was the first major dairy in the United States to reject the use of rBST (recombinant bovine somatotropin) in the production of its milk and put the information on a label in the form of a Farmer’s Pledge: “No Artificial Growth Hormone Used.”
Oakhurst apple juice pints can be found throughout the year in retailers across New England both large and small and local schools.
