PORTLAND, MAINE — November 11, 2011 — Oakhurst Dairy, northern New England’s largest independent family-owned dairy company, announced today that it is a Wreaths Across America transportation sponsor for the first time. The company will provide a tractor trailer and driver to help deliver holiday wreaths to Arlington National Cemetery for National Remembrance Day in December. Oakhurst Dairy’s Wreaths Across America truck will be unveiled to the public during the annual Portland Veterans Day Parade on Friday, Nov. 11, 2011, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. The parade will progress east along Congress Street from Longfellow Square to Portland City Hall where the official ceremonies will take place. The Oakhurst Dairy Wreaths Across America truck will be parked across from City Hall at the conclusion of the parade.

“Transportation services are absolutely critical to successfully execute an event of this size and scope,” said Karen Worcester, executive director, Wreaths Across America. “Through their donation of time, transportation and wreaths, Oakhurst is helping to make our mission a reality. Their generosity is indicative of what we’re seeing nationwide — businesses and individuals coming together to ensure our veterans are not forgotten. We thank Oakhurst for their commitment to our cause and look forward to sharing in this special journey with them.”

Wreaths Across America is a non-profit organization founded in 2007 by the Worcester Family, owners of the Worcester Wreath Company in Harrington, Maine. The wreath-laying effort began in 1992 when Morrill Worcester, co-owner of the Worcester Wreath Company, donated 5,000 evergreen wreaths to Arlington National Cemetery. Today, the annual pilgrimage from Maine to Arlington National Cemetery is known as the world’s largest veterans parade with nearly 50 long-haul tractor trailers making the week long journey. Along the travel route, the convoy of trucks stop at schools, monuments, veterans’ homes, and communities to remind people how important it is to remember, honor and teach – in keeping with the Wreaths Across America mission to teach younger generations about the value of their freedom and the importance of honoring those who have sacrificed to protect and defend this nation’s freedom.

“We are honored to play a role in helping Wreaths Across America execute its largest wreath-laying initiative in its almost 20-year history,” said Bill Bennett, president and CEO of Oakhurst Dairy. “Unveiling our Wreaths Across America truck on Veterans Day also made perfect sense because it is a day when we honor all veterans, both the living as well as those who have died in defense of our freedom.”

Bennett continued: “We are encouraging our employees, customers, dairy farmers and retail partners to join us in supporting Wreaths Across America by making a donation or by simply sponsoring an individual wreath.”

The 2011 Arlington National Cemetery wreath-laying ceremony and National Remembrance event will be the largest ever planned by Wreaths Across America. The organization intends to honor every veteran buried at Arlington National Cemetery by placing a holiday wreath and holding a brief moment of silence at each veteran’s head stone  — 220,000 in total. Additionally, Wreaths Across America will distribute another 180,000 wreaths for remembrance ceremonies in all 50 states, including memorials at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Augusta and New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen.
