Oakhurst Dairy's “Living Healthy Shopping Tour” Teaches Healthy Grocery Shopping Tips
Portland, ME – Oakhurst Dairy has awarded two winners in its “Living Healthy Shopping Tour,” an annual program that combines education and a cash prize to help people make healthier grocery-buying decisions.
Winners Vicky Bryant of Augusta and Cheryl Harmon of Naples each received $100 to spend on a shopping tour through their favorite grocery store, where they had an opportunity to learn how to make smart shopping decisions with Oakhurst Dairy Dietitian Pamela Stuppy.
“These tours help people understand food labels so they can make healthy choices for themselves and their families,” said Stuppy, a registered dietitian who advises Oakhurst. “With all of the products available in today’s stores, it’s important for people to understand how to read labels and choose well.”
Tour winner Vicky Bryant of Augusta said that she and her husband Frank had many questions to ask Stuppy as they walked through the store. They were interested to learn how to include more fresh products in their diets, and how to read nutrition labels to help them shop for items that contribute to a healthy diet, part of the couple’s goal of developing and maintaining a healthier overall lifestyle.
“We’re longtime buyers of Oakhurst milk because of what they do in the community and because it’s so fresh, and Frank started putting together his list of questions as soon as we found out we’d won,” said Vicky Bryant.
“It was great to go into the store with an expert! We’ve been trying to eat more fruits, vegetables and whole grains, and this was so helpful. I came away from the tour confident that I’ll be able to choose healthier foods in the future.”
Winner Cheryl Harmon of Naples, who toured an area store with her daughter Jolene, said she learned to read a label for information about sugar, sodium, and fiber. “Understanding labels makes it possible for me to limit the bad things and include plenty of good things in my diet,” she said. “Walking through the store was a real eye-opener.”
The 2009 sweepstakes marks the fourth year that Oakhurst’s Living Healthy Shopping Tours have taught winners how to make smart decisions when they buy groceries for themselves and their families. The Living Healthy program is a central part of the third-generation, family owned dairy’s commitment to getting involved to make a healthy difference in Maine communities.
Throughout 2010, Oakhurst will choose three Living Healthy Shopping Tour winners.
