Oakhurst Dairy Continues Support Of 4-H

PORTLAND, Maine (November 4, 2008)––As they have done for the past three years, Oakhurst Dairy continued to show its support of the 4-H Youth Development Program in both Maine and New Hampshire at a total of 11 fairs in 2008.  Oakhurst Dairy believes the program is essential to generating awareness of dairy farming among our youth, which serves as the all-important first step in attracting our future dairy farmers.

Oakhurst provides funding to help the 4-H Youth Development Program participate in Dairy shows across Maine and into parts of New Hampshire throughout the summer and fall months.  The Shows help teach youth through hands-on learning experiences. Boys and girls between the ages of 9 and 18 strut their stuff showing off cows they have groomed, clipped and cared for. Champions of all ages in the showmanship category receive checks from Oakhurst for $100 as well as Oakhurst banners recognizing their winning efforts.  Since 2005, Oakhurst has awarded a total of almost $16,000 to the winners.

 “The 4-H does a great job of raising the profile of dairy farming within our communities and helps nurture kids into our future dairy farmers, which as a local, family run dairy company is important to us,” Said Stan Bennett, President of Oakhurst Dairy. “We feel strongly about the mission of the 4-H and its dedication to teaching kids life skills through the unique hands-on projects they offer through their various programs.”

In addition, Oakhurst provided sponsorship dollars to the Pine Tree State 4-H Foundation allowing the Pine Tree State 4-H Dairy Team, consisting of 20-25 kids, to compete at The Big E in Springfield, MA. Those who don’t have animals to show participate in the dairy judging contest or the dairy quiz bowl.
